“SOME WOLF OF WILDNESS”: POETRY AND THE FERAL VOICE with Tim Lilburn
Planet Earth Poetry’s fourth annual poetry retreat will be held on June 2nd and 3rd in Victoria. Led by environmental and metaphysical poet and essayist Tim Lilburn, participants will work to develop and refine the “wild” in their voices.
Lilburn refers to Frederico Garcia Lorca’s claim that when artists have duende – that state of inspiration that is more than the muse or angel, something strange, a bit out of control, raw passion – their skill, their voices, will become somewhat torn. This tornness is not the diminishment of one’s style, but a making it feral. Some wolf of wildness will occupy the voice.
All poets spend years developing and refining their skill, Lilburn writes. The height of this skill, if we believe Lorca, will be a crumbling of part of this craft. How to bring a touch of the wild into your poems? This workshop will examine certain means of allowing this to happen from such exercises as free fall, the recording of the individualities of persons and things and “emptying the hands” to keeping a lectio divina (reading that pieces) journal.
Please bring to the retreat a new notebook and one or two books of poetry and other books that are speaking to you now. Also bring three recent poems you wish to revise.
