Summer retreat with Evelyn Lau
What Lies Beneath: A Workshopping Weekend
Facilitated by Award-Winning Poet, Evelyn Lau
We are delighted that Evelyn Lau will facilitate Planet Earth Poetry’s 2024 Summer Retreat!
What lurks beneath the surface of our poems? What needs to be brought to the light? Are we holding back words, or are the poems more effective with hard truths half-buried, glanced at aslant?
What?
This workshop-based retreat offers participants the opportunity to dive deep into a selection of their own work, and receive feedback from an esteemed poet. Participants will be given a safe space to explore personal stories behind their work, and to find a balance between powerful understatement and overpowering the reader. Writing exercises will also be offered, as well as a group Q&A session with the instructor.
Who?
Evelyn Lau, Vancouver’s third Poet Laureate poetry, has received the Milton Acorn Award, the Pat Lowther Award, a National Magazine Award, and the Fred Cogswell Award, and has also been shortlisted for the Governor-General Award, a BC Book Prize, and the Vancouver Book Award. Her work has appeared in over a hundred journals, and chosen multiple times for the Best Canadian Poetry anthology series. She leads poetry workshops at SFU Continuing Studies and around the Lower Mainland.
